Anders Nivfors NFOPad 1.56 released 2009-09-25 21:01:00
New version. Program settings can now be saved to an INI file instead of the registry. Saving settings to the INI file makes NFOPad portable, thus you can move the program folder or run it from an USB memory and still keep your settings (you'll have to re-associate any associated files though). The setting is off by default, switch it on from the Options page.

Changes from 1.55:
+ Program settings can now be saved to an INI file or the windows registry.
+ Added a READ ONLY notification in the status bar.
+ "TXT file" is now shown in the Windows Explorer's New menu (can be turned off in Options).
+ bugfix: fixed so force western latin encoding setting doesn't apply to unicode files.
+ bugfix: Save As and changing encoding would reload the wrong file (file saved correctly but wrong text loaded).

Great work!

As is NFOPad is already the best .nfo file viewer out there; and it's only a few features away from being the best notepad replacement ever... for the record, they'd be:

- date format standardization(ISO: YYYYMMDD hh:mm)/customization, maybe with support for the .LOG notepad functionality;
- better URL detection (www., for example...) and highlighting;
- possible executable size/speed optimization;
- one click solution for notepad replacement.

Just my wild ideas. Thanks for everything,

Thanks for the feedback, it's always welcome.

What do you mean with "one click solution for notepad replacement"?

Been using your wonderful application for a long time but haven't stepped out of the shadows 'til now to thank you. Shame on me!
Going to test it out on Win 7 right now, I'll get back to you when I've collected myself with some humble suggestions / feedback and possibly a donation :-)

Take care,

Wow thanks. I haven't been able to try the app on Win7 yet but it should(tm) work.

Something like going into Settings menu, turn to the Association tab (for example...) and clicking a button that would:

- Backup system notepad by making a copy of it, and dealing with the windows file protection warning of the next step;
- put in its place some kind of shortcut/hardlink/exe pointed at NFOpad, allowing for it to get invoked instead of the default Notepad.

BTW, would it be too much to ask if next version could also understand (fixed text) columns in place of pixels in the 'Auto width' portion of the Misc tab of the Settings dialog? >:)

You want to replace the actual notepad.exe? Why would you want to do that? Why not just simply associating the filetypes you are intersested in from the Settings/File association?

Regarding the auto width, personally I don't really care about the number of columns. I just don't want the window to be to wide and end up outside of the screen. So pixels are the natural measurement.
