NFOPad Fan Unicode saving still not handled properly 2011-12-03 03:41:33
We discussed this a few years ago, but I am finding now that this issue probably needs revisiting.

When you right click to create a new blank text file in Windows and open it in NFOPad, you can't seamlessly save that text if it includes Unicode characters by choosing Save. What happens right now is: 1) you choose Save; 2) the program warns you that you will lose information; 3) you cancel Save; 4) you select Save As... and proceed to save in Unicode.

I find that process unintuitive and tiring. Some of my text files include foreign characters and others don't. I don't want to go through a different saving process for English and non-English files. Instead of warning you that you will lose if you save in non-Unicode, NFOPad should just save in Unicode (since it obviously already knows what's going on). Let me know if you agree.

Thanks for the feedback, and you are absolutely right. It would make sense to have that dialog present you with an option to switch to unicode, I'll try to fix that for the next version.

Notice that if you always want to save to unicode you can switch default encoding in Options/Misc/Default encoding for save dialog.

Thanks for replying. My defaults are already Unicode. I think those settings are currently applied to the Save As... dialog, but not to the Save command. Cheers.

Ah, yes, it wont apply when opening an existing file and just pressing save.

Maybe it's possible to avoid dialogues and just convert to Unicode transparently when needed? That's probably how OS X handles it.
